The 68th running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 21st June 1933 over 1 mile 4 furlongs of The Curragh. Subscriptions were 70 sovereigns with a pot of 5250 sovereigns, 700 sovereigns to the second and 200 sovereigns to the third. The winner was owned and bred in Ireland by Mr William Barnett, trained by Richard C Dawson and ridden by Cecil Ray. The winner won by 1 1/2 lengths in 2 minutes 40.2 seconds, with a length between second and third.

JOCKEY PROFILE
Cecil Cameron Ray was born the son of a bricklayer in Kent on 5th August 1893. He decided that he future was in South Africa and emigrated to become an apprentice jockey where he was so successful that he rode over 700 winners. He returned to ride in England , but was more successful in Ireland where he rode the 1933 Irish Derby winner Harinero (SR 1922) for trainer Richard Dawson, and later in the season completed a Classic double by landing the Irish St Leger. He died in Epsom on 3rd November 1948 aged 55.

FORMLINE:- The winner conceded 4 lbs to the rest of the field but won by 1 1/2 lengths in 2 minutes 40.2 seconds. Harinero (7/1) was unplaced in the English 2000 Guineas behind Rodosto (SR 1952), as was Franz Hals (50/1). Harinero (22/1) was unplaced in the Epsom Derby behind Hyperion (SR 2248), as were Franz Hall (28/1) and Myosotis (50/1). Harinero (100/9) was fourth in the Doncaster St Leger behind Hyperion (SR 2248).
